How to create better prompts for images

Describe subject, composition, lighting, and placement with a single visual goal.

Start with placement

A website banner, profile image, and presentation illustration need different compositions. Specify the aspect ratio and where text or interface elements will sit. Ask for empty space if you plan to add text separately.

Pick one focal point

Name the subject and its relationship to the setting. Add visual details that support the message: angle, lighting, material, and palette. A long list of competing styles often makes the intended hierarchy harder to express.

Iterate one variable at a time

Keep the brief and change a specific element, such as background complexity or subject position. Compare the new result against the intended placement. Record useful prompt revisions rather than relying on memory.

Inspect before using

Check edges, anatomy where relevant, unwanted text, logos, and misleading details. Review the tool’s use terms and any rights associated with supplied reference material. Add final typography in a design editor when precise wording matters.

Try it on your own work

Write a banner prompt with one subject, two colors, and a clearly specified text-free area.
