How to compare AI tools properly

Compare the same task, plan, and constraints rather than marketing slogans.

Write the buying criteria first

List the task, required export format, team size, privacy needs, and budget. Separate mandatory features from preferences. Without these criteria, a large feature list can distract from whether the tool solves your actual problem.

Normalize the pricing

Compare monthly billing with monthly billing, or annual commitment with annual commitment. Check seats, credits, overages, taxes, and whether API charges are separate. Record the date and currency. “Starting at” does not describe the full cost of your workflow.

Use the same trial task

Prepare a representative input and a checklist for success. Compare time to an acceptable result, manual corrections, output quality for your use case, and export reliability. Label the result as your own small test rather than a universal ranking.

Choose conditionally

A tool can be appropriate for one team and excessive for another. Explain what would change the decision: a required integration, a lower usage level, or a need for editable exports. Recheck the official plan before subscribing.

Try it on your own work

Create a two-tool comparison with one mandatory feature and one realistic sample task.
